We do not charge for surrendering an animal in the field. The shelter here more or less charges what they want and if the owners can't pay they do not take the animal, they are told to contact Animal Control. Some of the people are just good samaritins doing a good deed but when you are told its going to cost you $20-$40 what can you do but either take it home or contact us. I feel for the animals and for the people who can't afford to pay. Times are hard right now, and I've seen many a grown man cry because he has to make the choice of feed his family or his dog. You can't help but fel sorry for some of these people.

We charge $25 for owner surrenders. First task is to get a photocopy of their driver's license, then ask them how long they've had the animal. If they've had the animal for more than 72 hours, its considered owned and they must pay $25 per animal or per litter if they're unweaned pups or kittens. They are counseled on the fact that the animal will very likely be euthanized and the adoptions, rescue/foster coordinators will determine if there is a way to find a place for the animal. If they're surrendering for reasons like money/behavior/etc, they'll be counseled on ways to correct the problem and try to get them to take the animal home. We are receiving roughly 550 every week, so we fill up very quickly. I wish we could charge $65!! That would be freakin' awesome.

HA! That's WAAAAY down from when I first started there. When I started, we had the highest per-capita euth rate in the country. We were receiving... wait for it.... OVER 1000 per WEEK. Euthing over 700 or more. That was as recently as May of this year. We were finally able to cut back only because they decided that we should only house what we could humanely hold. (duh.)

The Humane society in Ft. Worth used to have a poster in their lobby that stated they take in 48,000 animals per year (135 per day on a 7 day week, 156 per day if they are only open 6 days per week) and that they adopt out 4700 per year.

Fort Worth Animal Control has been criticized for having a monstrous euthanasia rate, but one of our cops had his dog impounded there and the final total was nearly $400 to get it back, so itís a small wonder that the kill so many.

See, that's the real problem! You have a city with that many "spare" dogs, and a shelter that charges what sounds like a pretty hefty "you were naughty" surcharge over the cost of an impound, and the public makes the obvious connection between the two things and acts accordingly. End results, puppies in pound get offed (too pricey!), and puppies in the neighborhood get bred (cheap! easy!).

I am moved to create poetry. Everybody stand back, waaaaay back: Here comes the lava.

Spay neuter your dogs , spay neuter your cats
Spay neuter your piggies because that's where it's at

Spay neuter the chickens , spay neuter the squirrels

Spay neuter the boyses , spay neuter the girlz

Spay neuter the bunnies , spay neuter those turtles

Spay neuter the mousies , and please, GOD, lock them girdles

Cause when all's said and done , the real trouble's thats
There's too many darn humans with "disposable pets."

The End.

Yup. It's a blessing ... wait for it ... and a curse. And typesetters at this moment are hearing the witching hour strike with a meeting in the morning. Don't you wish you could just stay up 24/24??
