Default Animal Hoarders: Behavior, Consequences, [etc]

Animal Hoarders: Behavior, Consequences, and Appropriate Official Response

PETA did a great job with this handout - thought I'd post it in case it might be helpful to any of you.

Man, it's tough to understand that behavior. I know it exists, and have even seen it, to a small degree. But, the extent of it is simply unbelievable. What is happening? Why are there so many sick people? And why do they have to bring so much suffering to others, human and animal?

what a great resource -- thanks so much for posting it.

We see a LOT of this and related craziness around here, to one extent or another. My theory is that the current state of the law relating to welfare, disability, and mental health is making it (1) possible for people to survive physically for long periods of time, without being actually competent for most basic life functions and (2) almost IMpossible to actually prosecute crimes related to hoarding (at least in our county).

I read a statistic the other day that said it costs San Francisco about $50,000 every time they have to send the police out to take someone into 5150 hold (mental illness, 72-hour hospital observation). Given the number of times I've been called out for similar kinds of thing, it must be costing us a MINT to handle mental illness this way. What a tragic waste of resources, when you consider how little good it seems to be doing ...

Default Hoarders

Great article on hoarders. I just dropped a copy off to our local DA's. I really can not believe that it was a PETA article, are they changing ? It was missing their normal slant.
This should be required reading for AC's and HO's.

Always be safe

TeddN - well, you have to remember that PETA has a "wacko crazy animal rights" department and a domestic animal cruelty department. The domestic animal cruelty department puts out some great materials for judges, DA's, etc - all having to do with different types of criminal cruelty.
