Default Dog Licensing

I would like to know what each state charges for Dog tags. I am trying to get our town to increase fees for unaltered dogs from $9. to $15. and leave the rest at the currant fees. They are claiming it would be discriminating. What do you all think?

My city charges, yearly in January, $5 altered dogs and $10 unaltered.

I would love to take it up to at least $20 for unaltered. Maybe this year....

Whitehorse, Yukon Territory
$35 unaltered
$25 lifetime (must be spayed or neutered)
I realize you asked for US comparisons but here is one from your northern neighbour.
It has generally been a good response from the public.

For the jurisdiction I work in, it is $5.00. I am working to change it so that it is more expensive to have an unspayed/unneutered dog vs one that is spayed/neutered. I like that lifetime idea

Up here in Dawson Creek Canada we charge $36 for an unaltered dog and $12 for an altered one. Another thing we do is in October, when we get the next year's tags we give a discount if you buy early. It is $27 for the unaltered and $9 for altered. It is set up this way to encourage people to spay or neuter their pet.

City of Las Cruces: $5.00 if altered $25.00 if not per year.

It is NOT discrimination, it is an incentive to spay and neuter. I think its discriminatory to allow the breeders to go untaxed while the rest of us pay taxes. How many breeders collect sales tax on their sales and pay income tax on their puppy/kitten sales? I'll bet next to none. Does anyone know how many dollars worth of puppies and kittens are sold each year? It really burns my chaps when they scream about fees...

Our city council just passed a new ordinance change effective 11-Jan-07:

Unneutered dogs: $50.00 (up from $10.00)
Neutered dogs: $5.00

So, obviously quite an incentive to get the snippity snip done! We do not license cats as of yet, but it is being discussed.

How do you keep track of lifetime licenses..do people come into your office and let you know when their pet dies?
