Default Spammer Elimination

As you all may notice, the board membership goes UP and then it goes DOWN. This is through the diligent efforts of your fearless moderators who routinely review our memberlist for the scum of the earth - SPAMMERS! We seek to eliminate porn, viagra, get rich quick schemes, vitamin supplements, and other such time wasting items.

We also prune away those extra accounts that happen when new people try to sign up eleven times. Its ok to be a newperson. Its not okay to be a spammer.

We heartily encourage new people to PM the mods, send us email, and say hello in the welcome section. If at first you don't succeed, please feel to ask for help.

And, if you are a spammer, rest assured I will cheerfully delete your account, ban everything about you, and consign to the electronic waste bin with the rest of your spammish brethren.

The mods. After much oxygen...

Spammers are breeding on the internet and ACOFunStop is another one of the targets/victims. If you notice a "newest user" with an unpleasant or insane sounding username, chances are its one of the spambots that have been flooding our site in the past few days. The Mods are working to keep the flood at a trickle level but some are here for a while until we login and delete the offensive account. Should you notice one, a quick PM to either of us will help put the spambot on our radar and give us a "heads up" that we need to spay some spambot spray.

Thanks
The Mods

And what's up with the "bump and lurk"ers? Those are weird...

STEPS WE'RE TAKING TO COMBAT SPAM REGISTRATIONS:
I'm taking the time to explain this in relative detail because I expect there may be some false-positives - that is, a small handful of legitimate people trying to register who get blocked as SPAM. I'll post a specific explanation of that in the FAQ anyway, but just in case your friends complain that they can't register, you'll know what's going on and why.

1. Multiple "captcha"s: A Captcha is the "type the letters that appear in this image". We are using several captchas, since spambots have become adept at deciphering the letters on the image using optical character recognition. The first Captcha that a registering user will see is one that asks them to pick the photo of a specific thing out of a series of several images. Since there are no letters or numbers, this type of captcha weeds out 90% of the spambots right then and there, since a bot cannot look at a photo and understand what it is.

The second captcha is in the registration form itself, and is a traditional "type what you see on the image" captcha.

2. Text captcha: On the registration form, there is a question written in regular text that asks you a simple question, like "Complete this phrase - Humane ____ Enforcement." This captcha once again goes towards weeding out bots, as it asks questions that are simple enough for a human to answer, but nearly impossible for a bot to grok.

3. RBL/Blacklist checking: This is where I expect we may have a few false-positives. The system actually checks the registrants IP address against the RBL servers. RBL servers, or Realtime Black List servers, maintain a database of the IP addresses of known spam sources.

When a new user tries to sign up, their IP address is checked against 10+ major RBL servers. If there is a match, meaning the new user's IP address is found in one of the RBL databases, the registration will be BLOCKED and the user WILL NOT be able to register.

If this happens to you or someone you know when trying to register, e-mail me or Mark and we will add your IP to the whitelist. When you e-mail us, be sure to tell us who you are, and what username you're trying to register under - so I know you're not a spammer. While dealing with the occasional false-positives will be a pain in the ass, I expect it to be far less time consuming than trying to figure out who is real and who is a bot from the 60+ new registrations per week we were getting before.

That said, there is the potential for a few spammers to get through. Bots will not be able to get through, but if a real human being has been hired to spam, they may be able to jump through all of these hoops. And if their IP hasn't been flagged yet as spammy, they could get past the RBL as well. So, keep your eyes open and use the "report thread" icon in the forums if you see that a spammer has gotten through. We'll whip out the BANHAMMER and take care of it pronto.
