Default 5th of July - Busiest Day in the animal control field?

So is it true that the day after 4th of July is the busiest day of the year for animal control officers in the field? It must be because, the ACO, Supervisor, and I have been called to work this sunday when we normally only work Monday-Friday. We are expecting a lot more loose dogs on sunday I guess due to fireworks scaring off poor dogs. This is my first July working in animal control and next month will make it a year that I've been in the field as a volunteer.

Anybody else working sunday as increased staffing are needed? I know several other local animal control agencies will have extra field officers out this weekend.

Our shelter/ACOs are on normal schedule this weekend. One ACO on duty both days. I'm always on call as the shelter vet. but could potentially act as an officer as well if needed. Usually one officer can handle it in our Township alone.

We used to, but fireworks have been illegal inside the city limits around here for years, so I haven't seen any significant difference in a while.

Yeah, one ACO also works our city, the whole animal control tem for the city is: 1 ACO supervisor, 1 ACO, 2 ACO Volunteers (I'm one of these) altogether 4 animal control personnel crammed in the Police Department's smallest office in the station. We are expecting a large amount of calls Sunday as are most other agencies in the Los Angeles COunty, as I type I can already hear people firing those loud fireworks.

Yes I believe it is. But you have to remember the 1st of the year and Halloween. They tend to be busy as well. We had a ton of bites to deal with on November 1st I ran 8 in one day last year. I am one of 33 officers......

Cheers, Scooterchic

Do you mean to tell me that you work in a city where everyone obeys the law?

Amazing!

They're outlawed in my city too but we're a little busier then normal because some people actually don't pay attention to the law. We have everybody on on the 4th - 2 working until 0130 instead of the normal 2200 OD time. On Sunday we'll have 4 of our 5 on duty one until 0130 again.

I did 30 calls in 9 hours one swing shift three (four?) years ago for my old county (and answered about 110 on the phone), but that was because the powers that be REFUSED to put any extra officers on duty. So it was just me, 400 square miles of county, and 400,000 really, really rich people expecting instant service ...

Hardly. When I was a kid, before the ban, we would be out there for hours, even days at a time shooting them off. Now people will only be doing it for a few seconds, then they scurry back inside before they get caught. Like Scoot said, itís actually worse on New Yearís Day. It sound like a small war with all of the fireworks (and gun fire), but it only lasts about a minute. I still get a lot of calls on Jan. 2 about lost dogs.

Well good luck to all you lucky ACOs working tonight. I'll be offduty at home relaxing, barbequing with the family. Tomorrow I'll be on-duty and see the damage, from what the boss and ACO say, usually we get busy the day even week after 4th of july.
