Anyone know why this job is always open?
I would apply but makes me nervous after seeing it available all the time.
Also, anyone know... I'm a certified police officer.. Would I still have to get certified as an aco or would they give me an exemption?

There's a high turn-over in animal control officers. Part of it may be the $13/hr pay!! Why not apply though, you can always turn it down if you don't like the offer (assuming you get it in the first place).

I'm sure you would still need to be certified as an ACO. Impounding dogs and arresting people ARE NOT the same. My officers will take a guy on crack over an angry pitbull anyday. I get called in for vicious (NOT!) dogs all the time. Also, the animal laws in Texas are probably not the same as the laws in NY. Don't worry, certification is not difficult and the agency usually pays for it.

If you want to see what the community leaders think an ACO is worth just compare that pay to a fast food counter worker in that area and then compare the pay to a police officer in the area. If the pay offered is closer to what the fast food worker gets rather then the police officer you know where you stand.

McDonalds - Front Counter Zone Manager (Cedar Park TX)
Job Details - Hours: Full Time
Pay: $8.00 (No listing for straight counter help but minimum wage is $7.25 an hour)

Cedar Park, TX - Entry Level Police Officer
Annual Pay $41,250 ( equals $19.83 an hour)

ACO $13.16 an hour. $5.91 more then Micky-D's (aka minimum wage)- $6.67 less then a Police Officer...

You have your answer.

Yeah.. I understand the difference between arresting people and dealing with dogs. I was a Dog Warden prior and owned a dog training school for a few years.

In TX if you are a Licensed Peace Officer in the Sate of TX you are exempt From the ACO class but you have 6 Months to do so. Just Take the few classes you need to be a TX Peace Officer
