Default PetMD's 10 Smartest Dog List

OK, it's bad enough that not a single pointing breed, let alone the MOST intelligent dog EVER, the Weimie didn't even make the list, but come on...the poodle ranked above the German Shepard?!

1) Border Collie (can't argue that one)
2) Poodle (did it get extra points for being annoying?!hehehe)
3) German Shepard (too humble to place higher?)
4) Golden Retreiver (very controversial...)
5) Doberman Pinscher (yeah, recognition!)
6) Shetland Sheepdog (would put this higher)
7) Labrador Retreiver (mine was Obviously NOT tested!)
Papillion (it's the ears!)
9) Rottweiler (too lazy to finish the test, maybe?)
10) Australian Cattle Dog (very underated)

I wonder if they meant the little frou-frou poodles or the standards. I've met some and have a standard that is really smart, too smart for his own good. He opens the bread box and get's the bread out to eat it.

Also, where is the aussie shepherd? Those are some of the brightest dog's I've seen.

We have a mutt here in town that is uncatchable. The dog knows what our trucks look like and when we pull up in the area, he get's up and runs away. He looks both ways before he crosses traffic, avoids enclosed yards even though he can clear a regular fence, hides in the woods until we leave and is very good at begging for food. He's the smartest dog I've seen in a long, long time.

Soooo, are we implying that when one downsizes the breed, one is also downsizing the brain??!
That ought to set the toy/mini world on it's ear! hehehe

I have a Golden that I got from one of the top breeders in the country. He cost me A LOT of money and while I love him dearly, my (mostly) Shepherd that I picked up as a stray can out think the big yellow dog tenfold.

I also used to have a sheltie/poodle cross as a child. That dog too had a whole lot more logic working for him than yellow does. Maybe the Golden and the Sheltie should trade spots?

Huh. No northern breeds on that list, not one. Intelligence test, my fat ol' franny. Methinks this was a test of social "willingness to please," not intelligence.

Why, look! Here's two dogs on the Chunnel train, for example. Which is more intelligent?

"Wow! I like your hair! Gee! I bet you're nice. You want me to sit? I'll sit down. Why don't I sit down right now? I bet those bagel crisps are delicious. They look delicious. I'd lie down for a bagel crisp. You want me to lie down? Look! I'm lying down already. Wow. I love these. So, hey! Are we in France yet? I can't see out from here, but, merde, man, I gotta pee."

Lies down, looks out the window, dead silence. Raised eyebrows, because, really, if you wanted your own bagel, maybe you should have brought two. Unbeknownst to you, the guy next you is trying to pick your pocket; he suddenly and permanently loses three fingers. Continued silence (except from the pickpocket), all the way into Paris.

Now THAT's a dog.

I sure hope this list does not get circulated for the general public. Just what I need rednecks owning dogs that are smarter than they. Wait a minute, that's already happening, I'm just lucky their favorite breed is the Pit, doh, I'm a goofy dog, give me a rope tied to a tree limb and I'll amuse "Bubba" for hours.

I have had both a border collie and a german shepherd and found them to be pretty equal in intelligence. But, each had a pretty stupid quirck. The collie would always want to inspect the black cats with the white stripe down the middle of their back, and the shepherd would eat cat poo like it was caviar. How smart is that?
