When I go in to work tomorrow I will find out where we got the vest from. I believe the PD ordered it for us custom. All I know is me and the ACO have to wear it when scooping up the dead or chasing the strays on the middle of the road. Had to wear it today in fact, scooping up some dead stuff on a busy street.

LoL....i can picture someone getting snagged too, hehe....i'm not sure why the vest thing hasn't come up with us...anything dead south of willow or wardlow(can't remember)on the 710fwy is our game....Caltrans takes the rest...but i haven't had the wonderful opportunity of grabbing one yet.

Good thing to think about though.

As a rule our highway dept takes care of anything on the freeway, but occasionally I will, because I can be there in a matter of minutes where they will take hours. I really wanted a vest with animal control on it after I worked several nights.

The first time I was chasing a dog after dark and it went into a yard with an open gate, I decided that there ainít no way Iím gonna go back there because some yokel may take a shot at me. After that I wore my traffic vest a lot when working at night, hoping that people would think anybody wearing a reflective vest must be legitimate, and at least call the PD before they shoot.

It's one of those laws that if you weren't directly involved in researching traffic safety issues on an ongoing basis, you probably wouldn't know about it. Most Fire Depts and Police Depts know about the new law, but as usual, Animal Control for the most part slipped through the cracks on this one. The law applies to petty much everyone, surveyors, trash crews, tow truck operators, and the like.

Our reflective vest policy covers where and when it needs to be worn, but also covers exigent situations where an officer might not be able to don the vest prior to exiting the vehicle, but it's use is otherwise mandatory on the freeways and highways in our jurisdiction. Looking at Google maps images of the 710, I can imagine that being a major freeway it probably receives federal funding. I had to place many calls to various CALTRANS individuals and offices before I got a decent reply on how our local freeways and highway are funded.

Good to know Sixby...i'll have to bring that up to my Sgt. Yeah the 710 is pretty busy...especially bc where we cover is going into the Port of Long Beach...so you can imagine MANY truckers, on 3 tiny lanes...fun stuff

We're supposed to have the type 2 vest but PD said we are a low priority and we'll get them someday. I use the inside out bag, no gloves. I'm becoming a flat cat bagging pro.

Scooped up a bloated skunk on New Year's Eve in a park. The corpse smelled even worse than normal dead thigns do.

If you are looking for a reflective vest, I believe ACES sells them with ACO on the back.
