Pit bull attacks, injures Norfolk's vice mayor and her dog

NORFOLK Vice Mayor Daun S. Hester was injured when a pit bull attacked her dog Monday morning.

Her miniature dachshund, Tootsie, was badly mauled, and Hester escaped the attack with some bruises and a pair of broken glasses.

Im fine, she said, indicating she hoped to attend at least a portion of tonights City Council meeting.

Her dog sustained six cuts and perhaps unknown internal injuries.

Were both at home mending, Hester said. My soreness will eventually go away.

The pit bull is being held by Animal Control. As of this morning, nobody had claimed the dog, Hester said.

Hester said the attack occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. in Ingleside, where she said she normally takes her dog for a walk each morning. Hester said she was walking down Garfield Avenue when the pit bull sprinted across the street,

At first I thought it was just going to sniff my dog, she said. But then it bit her dog around the neck. Hester said it appeared to her the pit bull was trying to kill her dog.

I started hollering and screaming, she said, and attempted to separate the dogs. She was knocked down several times while doing so.

Eventually, a neighbor came to her aid, scaring the pit bull away with a top of a cardboard box. Another neighbor also came to help, she said. They called 911 and eventually corralled the dog for Animal Control.

I was lucky because I live in a neighborhood of working people, and most everyone was gone, she said.

It was a traumatic experience. I have never felt so powerless, so defenseless.

She said next time she walks to her, she will do so with some protection.

I will always carry a bat or a stick from now on, she said. I guess youve always got to be on guard.

As a new pit bull owner, i would like to say that if the owner of the loose dog is found, Superkeeg should visit him with the 2x4 of wisdom for a good old fashion whoopin. that dog picked the wrong person to mess with.
