DAYTON Police and Montgomery County Animal Resource Center officials on Wednesday night were investigating a possible dog fighting operation at a home in the first block of Boltin Street.

The investigation began when Dayton police officers patrolling an alley as part of a federally-funded community effort called Weed and Seed spied a dozen or more dog kennels in a backyard.

Some of the dogs were inside a Chevy van that bore Texas plates. In all, they found more than 20 dogs.

Animal-control officers were called. By nightfall, a group of 10 police and animal-control investigators were at the house awaiting the issuance of a search warrant.

Mark Kumpf, director of the Animal Resource Center, said all the dogs would be seized and taken to the county shelter.

The investigation is the third involving the breed since July.

That month, police seized 31 pit bulls dogs from 4901 Hoover Ave. on suspicion of dog fighting.

In September, police seized four pit bulls from addresses on Lincoln and Anna streets.

Well, at least you didn't make a comment about the picture being my best side. I'll take small consolation in that.

Feels like my first day here - all over again! Can't say enough great things about my staff who were here till as late as 5am and back this morning! Great batch of people.

Great work Mark!

I hope your staff are proud of the amount of dogs they have managed to save from the scum of the earth dog fighters in your neck of the woods. After reading the article (and checking out the picture--grin--)I now have some questions.

1. How many pitbulls are you all now currently holding at the ARC? (if that is public information), and what would the percentage of kennel space occuppied by fighting animals be? I was thinking about this earlier, for people that dont realize the impact of illegal bloodsports, it would be interesting to poll all shelters, and see what the occupancy rate/time/kennel space is for animals being held due to fighting.

2. Does your team get to take the "lead" in this last seizure or is the police?

Ok, I wont bug you on what is sure to be a very busy day-- Please let your team know that all of us out here in the rest of the US are supporting them with our thoughts and hope that the bad guys hang.

Cross posting topics...

Seems like we can move favorite quotes from movies and tv over here... I can just see Mark and his Sr Officer walking onto the scene last night and then plug in the quote from the episode of Firefly I watched last night

Quote:
Mal: Well, looks like we got here just in time. What does that make us?
Zoe: BIG Damn Heroes, sir.
Mal: Ain't we just?
EXACTLY.
Keep up the good work

Pit bull confiscations force animal center shutdown
By Kelli Wynn
http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/con...tbullsweb.html

Thursday, October 26, 2006

DAYTON The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center will not be open to the public this weekend because the center is housing at least 80 dogs that have been confiscated in criminal investigations, according to Mark Kumpf, center director.

The latest instance was Wednesday night, when animal resource officers, along with the help of Dayton police, took 39 pit bulls from a house at 43 Boltin St., Kumpf said.

Two men, ages 44 and 41, were arrested at the Boltin address for charges associated with dog fighting and booked into the Montgomery County Jail, pending charges of having weapons while under disability, possession of criminal tools, possession of drug abuse instruments and dog fighting, according to a police incident report.

One of the men arrested told police that he transported the pit bulls in crates inside a minivan from Texas to Dayton, the report said. Police also found two semi-automatic handgun magazines with bullets, "numerous bottles of injectable substances and a hypodermic needle," a backpack containing $4,480 and a money order made out to one of the men for $750.

Dayton police are investigating whether the dogs are being used in a dog-fighting operations.

Kumpf said the 80 dogs, mostly pit bulls, have been taken from homes on Hoover Avenue, Anna Street, East Lincoln Street and Boltin. The high volume of these unadoptable animals has put the center in need of housing space for the adoptable animals, Kumpf said. That's why the center is reaching out to rescue agencies such as Humane Society of Greater Dayton and SICSA, as well as the public, for help.

"This is our version of the natural disaster," Kumpf said.
