ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

Salary Range: $3,828 – 4,019 – 4,220 – 4,431 – 4,653 – 4,886 – 5,130 per month.
Note: The City pays the employee's contribution to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS 2% at 55). Full-time employees do not participate in the Social Security system; however, federal mandate requires new employees to contribute 1.45% of wages to Medicare. After qualifying, the City compensates 2.5% or 5% above base monthly salary for bilingual pay. As a condition of employment, all new employees are required to enroll and participate in the direct deposit program.
An Animal Control Officer performs a variety of duties involved in the enforcement and communication of State and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the care, keeping, treatment, and control of animals. There is currently one full-time vacancy.
Essential Functions Include:
Patrol assigned areas for animal control related problems; pursue animals by vehicle and on foot; capture and impound unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals.
Examine captured animals for illness or injury.
Investigate reports of complaints of animals creating nuisances and take appropriate actions.
Issue citations and warnings to enforce State laws and City animal regulations.
Prepare reports and maintain accurate records, logs, and files of the animals and activities.
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications Guidelines:
Graduation from High school or its equivalent. Specialized training in police science, handling animals, or other related field is highly desirable.
One (1) year of field experience as an Animal Control Officer.
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
Possession of a certificate of completion of an Animal Control Officer/Humane Officer Academy and C.P.C 832 certification.
Knowledge of the basic methods of animal collection, care, and disposal; and occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of animal capture and control.
Physical Tasks and Environmental
Candidates must meet the physical standards required for performing the most demanding essential tasks of the position. Candidates must be able to: sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 75 lbs. Exposure to the outdoors and chemicals; ability to travel to different sites and locations within the City, safely operate a motor vehicle. Availability for shift work and on-call.

The established eligibility list may be used to fill current and future vacancies that occur during the life of the list. An eligibility list usually remains in effect for one year, unless it is exhausted sooner or extended for an additional period of time. All applicants will be notified of their status by mail. Prior to appointment, a candidate must pass a polygraph examination and extensive background investigation, which includes determination of recent drug use.
