Please note: This recruitment is a continuation of prior recruitment efforts for this position. San José Animal Care and Services, a division in the Department of Recreation, Parks and Neighborhood Service is accepting applications for full-time and part-time Animal Health Technicians for its new state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. This position will be responsible for providing paraprofessional medical care and treatment to shelter animals. Some of the duties of this position include: checking and monitoring the health of animals, as well as rendering first aid and emergency treatment; assisting the Shelter Veterinarian in surgery, spay/neuter and other medical procedures; maintaining pharmaceutical and other medical supplies; cleaning of kennels/ cages; feeding and caring for animals; and humanely performing euthanasia, as required. This position may be required to work weekends, holidays, nights, rotating shifts, and respond to emergency animal services assignments during off-duty hours. Incumbents may be required to lift up to 100 pounds while handling animals and equipment.

Desirable Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the most desirable combination of training, skills and experience, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable experience, knowledge and skills for this position are:

Ability to perform pre-op surgical procedures, including the administration of anesthesia
Ability to implement Division and Departmental protocols/procedures
Ability to create and maintain accurate records
Ability to follow verbal instructions
Knowledge and comprehension of Federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the care, housing, treatment and impounding of animals
Knowledge of and exposure to all activities occurring in a high volume public animal shelter
Valid certification to perform euthanasia (Incumbents will be required to obtain euthanasia certification within one (1) month following employment)
Valid certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the following:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: One (1) year of experience in the care and handling of domestic animals
