Salary as of 1/07/06: $3080 - $3784

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an eligibility list for this classification. Initially, the list will be used to fill one full-time vacancy in the Animal Control Division of the Public Health Department in Placerville. The list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, and extra-help vacancies in Placerville.

THE POSITION: The essential functions and corresponding duties include:

Providing supervision to staff, including: organizing and assigning work to staff; providing work review and evaluation of staff; and setting priorities.

Overseeing the kennels and field operations, including: investigating complaints of animal cruelty and animal bites; investigating complaints against officers; and ensuring humane animal protection and control.
Maintaining statistical records and preparing reports, including: assisting in the preparation of criminal cases; acting as liaison with the criminal courts; and obtaining search warrants, searching sites, or arresting offenders and testifying in court.

Practices and principles of employee supervision, including work organization and review, training and discipline; basic species and breed identification of a variety of domestic and common wild animals; symptoms and behavior associated with rabies and other common diseases of animals; behavior and handling of common domestic or wild animals; methods and equipment used in the care and control of animals; state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to the proper care and control of animals; and safety practices pertaining to the work; recordkeeping principles and practices.

Planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing and evaluating the work of others; training others in work procedures; handling, capturing and controlling animals humanely and effectively under stressful or emergency circumstances; assessing animal behavior and making effective decisions regarding handling, capturing or destroying the animal; identifying symptoms and behaviors associated with rabies and other common domestic animal diseases; operating County vehicles, radios, and other animal control tools and equipment; reading maps and following directions; maintaining accurate records and preparing reports of work performed; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience in animal care, control or enforcement at a level equivalent to the County's class of Animal Control Officer II, or one year at a level equivalent to the County’s class of Sr. Animal Control Officer. College level coursework in animal control, animal behavior, law enforcement or a related field is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to work with animals and regularly lift and carry up to 80 pounds. Must either have completed the California State Humane Officer Academy and coursework required by PC Section 832, or have completed a similar Humane Officer/Animal Control academy or training curriculum and must be able to successfully complete the California State Human Officer Academy and coursework required by PC Section 832 within one year of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain firearms qualifications.
