Default Rabies Vaccine Reactions?

Has anyone gotten the pre-exposure rabies vaccination and had a reaction to it? If so, what was your reaction and were you allowed to continue the series?

I had the pre-exposure vaccine in veterinary school. I had a mild swelling of the arm and a slight fever. That was about 15 years ago.

This past April, one of the ACOs I work with brought a feral cat in that tested positive for rabies. My technician was bitten; I was exposed as I tried to break the cat and him apart. I had to get the post-exposure vaccine for vaccinated people (only 2 injections). With the first vaccine of the series, I had the mild swelling of the arm. The second one was a doozy. Both my arms swelled and I developed an asthma attack that lasted for over 2 months. I was constantly winded and had to use an inhaler for the time period. My doctor still recommended the vaccine even though my rabies titer came up high since they could treat a vaccine reaction but they could not treat rabies if I came down with that.

I have gotten the pre-exposure vax and was slightly sick after the first one, which I mentioned to the nurse when I went in to get the second; she said that some people do feel sick, and the second one is worse than the first. I kind of expected to be sick again, so I had scheduled the next day off, and I was glad I did. My arm didn't swell, but I did have flu-like symptoms: fever, achy, headache, tired, tummyache, etc.-same as after the first, but worse. I had a lesser reaction to the third.

The cool thing was the color of the vax...it is a very pretty bright pink!

As I recall my co-worker had some fever after one of his vaccination, but that was 21 years ago, so I could be wrong. It didn’t interfere with his series though. I personally have never had any reaction.

I always wondered the same thing. They won't let you leave the clinic for 15 minutes after giving it to you. I didn't ask why. I didn't have a reaction to any of the series of three shots. I also haven't had one since 1998.

That's the old CYA in case you get sick enough to die; they want you someplace you can't call a lawyer. Seriously, though, considering how crazy dangerous rabies itself is, I think the vaccines are pretty safe. I had post-exposure shots for a scratch from a rabid cat in 1991, got a little bit flu-ish (a little nauseous, a little tired) for a day after the second shot but was otherwise fine.

I had some issues with nausea through the experience. According to the nurse who administered it is not all that uncommon.

I did a couple years ago, arm swelled up, severe rash that itched so bad I wanted to take a wire brush to my arm, and my arm had fever if that makes sense. This was a booster shot that we take every 3 years. Next time I got a booster I had too sit in the clinic for 30 minutes under observation.
