Exclamation Disaster Sheltering for Companion Animals - Little Rock - March 5 & 6, 2010

It is my understanding that this class has a limited number of seats available, but as of 2/11/10 there were still spots open.

This training normally costs $125 per student, but is being sponsored locally and so the attendance fee is only $65.00!! But you must register through the Humane Society of Saline County. Their website with more information is www.hssaline.org.

Disaster Sheltering for Companion Animals

This class teaches important skills for planning and implementing emergency sheltering for companion animals; however, it is not a required training for becoming an official American Humane Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ Volunteer. To qualify to become a volunteer, you must attend Basic Animal Emergency Services training.

Who should attend:

Anyone interested in the welfare of animals during or after a disaster, professionals trained in disaster response, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, animal shelter staff, animal control officers, veterinarians and vet technicians, animal handlers/trainers and Red Cross volunteers.

Topics include:

Differences between temporary and co-location shelters
Safety concerns
Communication techniques
Site selection and amenities
Shelter set up
Identification and recordkeeping
Differences between human-made and natural disaster response
Animal handling
Managing volunteers
Security
Media relations
Legal issues and liability
Demobilization procedures

Learning objectives:

To develop the skills to plan for and implement emergency sheltering for companion animals during or after a disaster, whether at the local or national level.

We have 2 people signed up - great opportunity to get training for very little money!
