Default Rally to Save King County Animal Control - 09/24/2009

I as well as member's of Save KCACC will be holding a rally this Thursday 09/24/2009 in Seattle,WA in an effort to save KCACC from being eliminated by the King County Council.

We need people to go and support KCACC!!!!

Please bring as many people as you can!!

King County Animal Care and Control service area covers 2,200 square miles, with 1.2 million people, and nearly 600,000 cats and dogs? That’s more square miles than the state of Delaware (1,954), almost the population of Hawaii (1,288,19 and the equivalent population of Washington DC (532,66.

The first rally to support the homeless pets of King County is this week! Let’s get fired up and show our support! Details below:

WHEN: Thursday, September 24th from 10AM – 2PM

WHERE: As of now, the park on the south side of the King County Courthouse. The courthouse address is: 516 Third Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104

If this changes, you will receive another message prior to the event, and the information will also be posted on the Facebook Group page as well. Don’t worry, if we have to move it, it will only be a block or so.

Animal Control Officer Guild Representative Rebecca Cleveland will be on-site throughout the rally. Or, individuals wearing blue “Volunteer” t-shirts.

As a group we will be coming together to show our support for the homeless animals of King County, and letting the Executive and Council know that NOT having an open admission, public animal shelter and services is not an option.

We will be using this time to:
• Pass out flyers and information
• Ask people to sign the petition
• Carrying rally signs
• Educate the public about the flood issue, the budget issue and how they will affect KCACC, the services the shelter and animal control provides, and how valuable the shelter and animal control services are to the health and welfare of our communities.
• Collecting stuffed animals and signs to present to the Executive after the rally. The goal is to collect 1000 stuffed animals to represent the 1,000 animals the shelter takes in every month that will otherwise be roaming the streets and neighborhoods of King County if there is no animal shelter or animal control services.

Start thinking about any signs/slogans you’d like to make for the rally, such as:
• Keep the Shelter Open
• KOPS (Keep Our Public Shelter)
• We Heart Our Animal Shelter
• 12,000 Homeless Pets Need a Public Shelter
• Where Will You Go To Find Your Lost Pet
• Don't Throw Away Our Animals
• Animals Need Our Voice

We’ve listed the rally under the Facebook Group “Events” page. Be sure to RSVP if you plan on being there so we can get an approximate count!

This is a hot topic and folks are very passionate about it. The media will be invited, and we hope to have enough presence throughout the 4 hours for whenever they show up, though we are requesting they arrive around noon (12PM). So if you work downtown and have a few minutes to spare – come by and drop off your stuffed animal, sign the petition and cheer for the animals! (It’s supposed to be a nice weather too.)

Possibly. They have a good idea of what people think and we want them to respect that. We ask that if they do put in an appearance, please be courteous.

We would like to remind everyone that is a peaceful and positive rally. Anyone acting rudely or aggressively will be quietly asked to leave. Additionally, anyone displaying signs with profanity or disturbing imagery will be asked to throw the sign away, and possibly to leave as well. If you see someone acting rudely or a sign that is troublesome, please find ACO Rebecca Cleveland to deal with the individual.

Don’t worry as we plan to have a second rally in Kent later this fall. However, this is the big push and statement for the budget and having as many people there in support of the animals has great impact!

Thanks for your continued support! Together we can save our public animal shelters!

• Sign the online petition:
• Download the Save KCACC flyer to print, post, hand out where ever you can get permission (vet offices, farmers markets, library, coffee shops, etc...)
• Contact the media, write letters to the editor. Keep the message out there. Here is a sample letter to inspire or use:
• Contact the cities listed on the flyer and ask them what they will do if there is no animal control services provided by King County
• Join this Facebook page, visit our blog: for updates and new information, or follow us on Twitter:
• Share this F/B page or blog address with everyone you know, and ask them to get involved
• Sign up for email updates at:
• We have a small store at cafepress, where you can purchase (no markup) t-shirts or sweatshirts to wear your support: Thanks to all who have already shopped!
• Attend our rally, which we are planning for on September 24th. Bring a stuffed animal to give to the Executive to represent an animal surrendered at the shelter. (The goal is 1000 stuffed animals = avg number of intake per month).

• Contact the executive, council member and candidates for office. Let them know that not having an open admissions animal shelter and services is not an option for King County:

Kurt Tripplet
County Executive

Bob Ferguson, Council Vice Chair, District 1

Larry Gossett, District 2

Kathy Lambert, District 3

Larry Phillips, District 4, Member since: 1992

Jane Hague, Council Vice Chair, District 6

Pete von Reichbauer, District 7

Dow Constantine, Council Chair, District 8
(Candidate for KC Executive)

So King County Council is going to take all the strays and owner surrenders and ferals in their own homes and care for them when they eliminate them from the budget? Man, that's pretty nice of them.

What are they thinking? If I were closer I'd be there!
