i'm not even going to start complaining...we get paid pretty decently at my location. Orange County definitely better, but they also have like 3 times the about of area to cover.

Northeast Florida, just under $17 an hour after 13 years of service. No bonus for EU Cert. No bonus for NACA Cert. No bonus for Cruelty Certs. No bonus Period. Just received a "Volunteer Separation of Employment Packet" because the County budget is 15 million in the hole, thanks partly to Governor's Property Tax Cut and poor planning by Local Government. Those of us with more than 5 years of service can take 12 weeks severance pay, accumulated vacation and sick leave. No re-hire for 3 years. No unemployment benefits. The bottom has fell out of the real estate industry (yes, in this county real estate is the only industry). For example 3 years ago people were buying new construction houses for over 300,000 in neighborhoods that should have been worth 1/2 that. Today, these houses aren't selling for 120,000. There are no 4 or 5 star restaurants in the County. There is no tourist trap. But there are 3 Super Walmarts, 2 Super Targets. The County is just under 700 square miles with a population of about 160,000. We take in about 9000 animals per year. There will be no COLA's or Merit Raises for 3 years (including this one) and talk of a either a pay cut or a 32 hour work week. Sorry kid, no Wii this year. But at least I still have a job, for a little while anyways.

Actually the cost of living here is a a little less than LA due to there being no state taxes. Because of the economy the housing issue here is pretty dire. I think we are one of the top cities for forclosures right now, we have also seen alot of dumped horses recently as well because of the financial problems. I live about 60 miles outside of Vegas and the cost of living there is less than Vegas. As far as merit raises and such, I am not sure how that will work this year due to the state being in such massive debt, we will just have to see.

You could start by contacting the Human Resources dept. with the dept your interested in.

They expect you to be "on call" 24/7/365 or more.
