We are not allowed to carry firearms in Chicago. There are some pros and cons with this...but I see this happening down the road with our department. The nature of what we do is ever changing, and we are doing more actual law enforcement duties now, especially around dangerous animals and cruelty/bloodsports cases. On the other hand, carrying a firearm has obvious risks....so I am not totally decided one way or the other if this is a good idea.

We finally got body armor approved by budget...I can say why, but it is pretty hush hush as to the reasons behind it, but it makes a lot of sense!
This is a dangerous profession-ask the ACO who got stuck with a blade in OK City-thank goodness he was wearing a vest. The vast majority of ACO's in MI (myself included) work in the Police Dept. And as I have pointed out before-your biggest liabilty (statisically backed) is the 5 ton bullet you drive down the road picking up strays and that is across the board in any capacity in any municipality. Good luck with the job search.

Did you ever think about changing fields? I just got a notification that one of our health department reps is leaving to go to vet school. They are basically our go to people on rabies questions, they do shelter inspections and other things dealing with state law. I may even consider it when the job is actually posted.

Like I have said before, if you like seeing snow, bring pictures. I only zipped up my jacket 3 or 4 times all last winter because 40s and 50s is about as cold as it normally gets around here.

I heard a rumor last night that I find quite annoying. They are having a “health fair” in the near future, and in the past these have been vendors for supplemental insurance and things like that. The rumor is that due to the sagging economy, this health fair is going to show alternative insurance programs/policies because they are considering dropping ALL city paid insurance (other than workman’s comp). Hello! I’m working 2 jobs now trying to get a little ahead, if I have to drop $750 a month on insurance I’ll have to pick up a third job just to cover that.

GTO,

The best Health Officers that I have seen are also ACOs. I have gone to ACO/ACI class as well as some specialized courses (such as search and seizure, domestic violence, etc.) with the HOs and later have assisted some of them when they had questions regarding rabies etc. They are the best prepared people when it comes to making decisions for their municipalities. Good luck in your pursuits.
