Default What would YOU like to see in an industry publication?

While I was at the Expo, I ran into the editor for Shelter & Rescue News. I offered to post her question here, so that you folks could comment on what you would like to see:

Quote:
Here's what I'm trying to do: As a prospective publisher, I'd like to know what are the one or two topics animal welfare professionals would most like more information and/or training about.

Answers so far have included:
  • * what to do with (or about) pit bulls
  • * better collaboration with other agencies
  • * communicating with the public
  • * learning what programs or products work well (or don't work) at other shelters. Nobody wants to waste time or money doing or buying something that won't work well.
Responses can be sent to editor@shelterandrescuenews.com. All responses and contact information will be kept confidential.

Thanks in advance!

How about getting the message through to the Judges and Prosecutors that abuse, neglect, animal fighting, etc. are real crimes? I was at the expo, took the animal fighting class (among others). There was some dirtbag that was interviewed on the film "Off the Chain", (which, BTW, all Animal Control / Humane Officers should watch). He's dressed in a hood and sunglasses and talks about his dogs and dog fighting etc. At the end of the film it says he was convicted of multiple counts of animal abuse / cruelty. (Everybody in the room cheers!) The next frame says he got 6 months of unsupervised probation! (Of course you hear a big gasp from the audience then). Like WTF!! If the court system didn't make it a joke maybe we'd be able to have more impact on it.

Info about court cases and how they were handled specifically would be nice, from all over the country.

How about a regular animal behavior problem solving column. Unique solutions for fence fighting, territorial aggression, barking, charging out the front door, fear issues, separation anxiety, walking on a Gentle Leader or harness, thunderstorm fear, socialization, and so on.

How about a national listing of breed specific rescue organizations.
I only seem to find out about a particular rescue org. when I come across an unusual breed and or situation. I know of only a handful of local organizations outside of our local SPCA.

AKC lists links to specific breed clubs on their website www.akc.org Once you go to their site, click on the breed then follow the link to the breed club's website. Every breed club that I know of offers at least a rescue contact person.
Some clubs then have links to rescues all over the country.

I'd like to hear a lot more about taking care of (and self-care for) employees: stress reduction, safety, animal handling techniques, employee/manager relations, and that kind of thing. I think the shelter business is about keeping people who really care about the animals in the job, so you're not reduced to hiring the ones who don't. We get so many employees who have great, idealistic attitudes, and then we burn them out in a year or two...

You can go to PetFinder.org & click on shelters/rescues at the top of the pg. then put in your zip - or go to any state & look. Rescues will come from out of state to pick up.
