Position Duties

Capture, lift, carry and detain stray and vicious animals; collect evidence, write clear and objective reports, participate in court case preparation and testify in court and administrative hearings; answer questions, enforce ordinances and regulations and negotiate with the public in hostile situations; issue citations to offenders, pick up and transport dead and injured animals; operate a 2-way radio, respond and dispatch officers to assist field officers; assist police, fire, health, zoning and other agencies with emergency situations; patrol areas for ordinance violations, investigate and resolve neighborhood animal nuisance complaints, communicate with complainants, victims and suspects; maintain assigned equipment and sell pet licenses; work with volunteers.



Required Qualifications

Three years animal care and treatment experience, including one year assisting a licensed veterinarian or successful completion of a recognized animal welfare course (veterinary technology, NACA 100, etc.); or 1 year as an Animal Control Officer. Must have the ability to care for and treat animals in a humane manner; deal courteously but firmly with citizens when enforcing City ordinances; carry out oral and written instructions; act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; perform strenuous manual tasks in the upkeep of the Animal Shelter; work in conditions of extreme stress; be impartial to both sides of an issue and make fair and sound decisions. Frequent contact with hostile and abusive members of the public; required to work outdoors and in all types of weather; exposed to the possibility of animal attack while handling injured, stray, vicious and dangerous animals; physical exertion is necessary to capture and detain animals. Washington State Driverís License and an excellent driving record. Driving abstract required. Required to work nights, weekends and holidays for an indefinite period of time. Necessary inoculations for rabies, etc., are required and will be provided by the employer. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be willing to maintain the level of physical ability necessary to carry out the required duties of this job. A pre-employment physical is required.

Employees in these positions are required to obtain and maintain a Special Police Commission issued by the Seattle Police Department (SPD). The Commission process involves an extensive background investigation by SPD that will include the review of a candidateís employment, credit and criminal history, and driving record. Personal and employment reference checks will also be conducted. Prior criminal conduct, a poor driving record, the use of drugs, and evidence of dishonesty or untrustworthiness may preclude candidates from obtaining a Commission. The background investigation process may take up to three months.



Desired Qualifications

Experience in an animal control, animal shelter, or other animal related environment; experience in interpreting and enforcing ordinances, rules and regulations; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong customer service ethic as well as a firm commitment to team building; community relations experience.

Seattle pays pretty good. Thats the only reason I would ever work in seattle. Its not a very appealing city for me.
