We still have the same surname my great-grandfather Nilsgaard brought from Norway; it is an uncommon name in this country, which made it even more confusing for people when trying to differentiate between my cousin and me! We do not look anything alike, however, she being 1/4 Native American with darker features, while I am also Scottish, Swedish, and German and subsequently have a lighter complexion.

I always liked Kristina's name better than mine, by the way...however, I am thankful my parents did not make my spelling/pronunciation problems worse by going with their initial name choice-Kierstin...a pretty name, but soooo difficult for people to spell/read aloud correctly!

Maybe some of that Auld Alliance sneaking on in there ... lots of Scots-French ties, what with Bonnie Prince Charlie doing his best to die there drunk and all.

My poor sister actually ended up with the nickname "Chattanooga" at one point, because her fourth-grade teacher gave up trying to pronounce "Siobhan" and called her that instead. Luckily, being a Navy family, we moved around too much for anything to stick too long. I think it's interesting she gave all her children "normal" names (Ben, Joe, and Celia) .

A lot of my dad’s friends called him “Jack” all the time, eventhough there is neither a J, C or a K in his actual name. One day I asked him why they call him Jack, and he told me that back in WWII all sailors were known as Jack, and that name just seem to stick with him.

I never liked nick names, I don’t even like it when they abbreviate my name, but when I worked in the street dept some 21+ years ago everybody had one. Mine was “Alien Being”, and there is a story behind that, but it is TMI.

One of the people I worked with back then (in fact the one who came up with that name) owns a guitar shop now, and whenever I go in there, he still calls me Alien.

Love that!!! My favorite nickname is "Phred" -- my brother and sister still call me that, after the radical Vietnamese character in Doonesbury. I was always the left-winger in the family ...
