Title: Animal Control Officer

Job Description:

Animal Control Officer is a general duty patrol position, which involves responsibility for enforcement of State and local laws relating to animal control, working with the public to acquire voluntary compliance, issuing summonses and testifying in District Court. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations with new assignments accompanied by specific instructions. Regularly assigned duties are performed with a considerable amount of independence. The Animal Control Officer operates under the general guidance of the Police Chief and direct supervision of the Police Lieutenant.

Typical Duties.

The following are some of the typical duties of the Animal Control Officer, and are not exclusive of other related duties which may be required from time to time:

1. Respond to calls for service and investigate reported incidents in the area of animal control, such as dog at large, barking dog, injured animal, cruelty to animals, dangerous animal; issue warnings or citations as necessary.
2. Patrol community to enforce animal control laws and ordinances, and to foster public visibility.
3. Maintain records and prepare reports and documentation to support citations; testify in court proceedings, when necessary.
4. Transport stray or injured animals to holding facility.
5. Work with Town Clerk to ensure that all dogs are licensed.
6. Report unusual activity or circumstances to the Police Department Shift Commander.
7. Interact with Fire/Rescue and Public Works Departments, other law enforcement agencies, department employees, representatives of local, state and federal agencies, and the general public for overall management effectiveness with respect to Animal Control issues.


Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and ordinances regarding animal control principals, practices, techniques, and equipment, ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action according to law and departmental policies, excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability to develop and maintain working relationships with other law enforcement personnel, department employees, and the general public.


Appointees to the position of Animal Control Officer must possess the following qualifications:

1. High School diploma;
2. Ability to deal with animals, some of which may be injured;
3. Ability to cope with stressful situations and communicate firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others;
4. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

Other Considerations.

1. Maine driver?s license, Class C.
2. Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, as well as specialized software.
3. Successful completion of pre-employment physical exam.
