FILING PERIOD: Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. First application review date is July 7, 2006.

LOCATION: Carson City Animal Services Department.

SALARY: Starting annual salary is $29,157 annually with employer paid retirement into the Nevada PERS system. The City of Carson City offers a liberal benefits program. Benefits include Medical, Dental and Vision paid at 100% for employees, and offered to dependents, at a cost to the employee. There is no Social Security, other than 1.45% for Medicare and no State income tax. The City has other competitive benefits including annual leave, retirement benefits and others.

THE JOB: The Carson City Animal Services Division of the Health department is committed to the care and control of animals in the community; and the health and safety of the citizens of Carson City. The candidate selected for this position will perform routine patrol activities, capturing and caring for stray and injured animals while educating the public and enforcing all city and state statutes. The ideal candidate for this position is responsible for professional, informational and enthusiastic assistance to the public. Candidates must also assist with the maintenance and operation of the department of Animal Services facilities and in the care of the animals in custody. Animal Regulation Officers perform various office duties such as assisting the public with complaints, adoptions, licensing, impounds and burials. This position requires a person to work with the public in an empathetic and informative manner.

Patrols the city for injured or stray animals.
Captures animals with a snare or tranquilizer gun.
Responds to citizens complaints of stray animals.
Issues citations to owners who are in violation of city and state statutes and explains related ordinances to the public.
Assists in the maintenance and operation of the department of Animal Services facilities and in the care of the animals in custody.
Assists in the maintenance and operation of the Pet Cemetery.
Must dig graves.
Must be able to do heavy lifting of approximately 60 lbs. of animal food.
Perform related duties as required, must perform all duties in a safe manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Graduation from High School or the equivalent and one year of Animal Law Enforcement experience. Must be able to do heavy lifting of approximately 60 lbs minimum and be able to do excessive physical work. Must be able to possess and maintain a Nevada Drivers License and be 21 years of age. Candidates must live within 20 minutes of Animal Services and maintain a working phone number.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: Must successfully complete the National Animal Control Association Training Academy Level I within the first 18 months of employment. Must also successfully complete the Euthanasia Technician Certification class offered through the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within the first 24 months of employment.

ABOUT THE EXAM: Examination will consist of an analysis of the applicant's training and experience based on the application. In order that a proper evaluation can be made, the application should be as complete and detailed as possible. Ranking will be based on scores given to training, education, and experience beyond the minimum qualifications. The Human Resource Department reserves the right to call only the highly qualified applicants to the interview.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a typical field setting, vision to read material and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.

SPECIAL NOTE: Employees must be willing to work overtime, shift work, weekends and holidays, and standby. One year probationary period. Must reside within 20 minutes of Carson City.
