Job Description
The Animal Control Officer is responsible for the routine enforcement of city and state animal laws, responding to citizen complaints regarding domestic animals; impoundment and care of animals; investigations of violations and preparation of cases for court; and euthanasia of animals.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL: Requires high school, GED, or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Applicants for ACO must have a clean criminal history and background check and a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. They must complete a physical exam and drug screen.

Once hired, they must successfully complete required training for Animal Control Officers and certifications including firearms, other personal protection equipment and euthanasia by injection. Must be 21 years of age upon hire.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over six months.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, heights, traffic, disease/pathogens, and violence.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of animal care and behavior. Knowledge of and the ability to recognize symptoms of disease or injury in a variety of animals. Knowledge of laws pertaining to animals and their application. Customer service experience and the ability to interact with other employees and the public.

Special Instructions to Applicants
Candidate must successfully complete background and criminal history investigation, physical and psychological examination, drug screen, prescribed course of instruction, and required certifications as per law departmental policy. Must be able to work various shifts.
